The Instrumental Music Department of Wawasee High School will perform their final concert of the 2014-15 school year 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, in the high school auditorium. Admission is free.
The strings of the Wawasee orchestra will be playing a variety of chamber music works, including selections by Mozart, Tschaikovsky, Mussorgsky and Rossini. “Dueling” violinists Carly Erst and Grace Ondrla will face off with Corelli’s “La Folia” variations, and the entire orchestra will perform Merle Isaac’s “Quinto-Quarto Suite,” four short works in 5/4 time — all without a conductor.
Under the direction of Hope Bechtel, the concert band will perform “Ireland: Of Legend and Lore,” a piece using traditional Irish folk tunes to tell the story of war and love in Irish history. They will conclude the program with “A Big Band Tribute,” featuring the music of jazz greats Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman.
The concert will also include awards and recognition of senior instrumental music students Carly Erst, Erica Grotz, Jamsey Heckaman, Ashley Larson and Sydney Maas.
