Nov. 4, 1980 — There will be no vehicular underpass for the ConRail tracks — at least not in the near future.
By a 4-1 vote, Warsaw’s Common Council Monday night ended a discussion that began back in April 1978 to find a way to ease rail conflicts for east- and west-bound traffic in Warsaw.
Following what Councilman Terry Klondaris called a choice between the “long-term benefits and the short-term detriments,” the council voted to end “all further authorization on the underpass project, including engineering work.”
Councilman Phil Roy, the only dissenter, felt city officials were cutting their own throats on a $3.5 million project that had been guaranteed 100 percent federal funding.
Nov. 17, 1979 — Tippecanoe Valley senior Mark Shireman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Shireman, was the second Tippecanoe Valley football player in three years to win the Phil Eskew Award for mental attitude. He joins former Viking Ray (Rockhill) Secrist and becomes the seventh Class A recipient.
Nov. 23, 1976 — It’s a whole new ball game for Warsaw Community High School basketball.
The Tigers, who open their season Wednesday at Columbia City, will enter the Eagle gym with a new head coach (Jim Miller), a new assistant coach (Al Rhodes) and nine new players. Add to that a whole new offensive and defensive system, and the 1976-77 version of Warsaw basketball will probably be something akin to a shiny new automobile: expect some bugs, but once ironed out, it could be a flashy, well-oiled machine.
November 1968 — A new coach, challenges and conference will all be part of Wawasee High School’s first year of basketball competition which gets under way Friday night.
Wawasee, a consolidation of Milford, North Webster and Syracuse high schools, will be held in its initial year schedule of 20 games by head coach Vernon Zurcher.
Team members include: Gary Firestone, Steve Zurcher, Russ Mikel, Andy Hartley, Ben Fowler, Larry Kammerer, manager Steve Edwards, Al Barrett, Dave Elliott, Bill Pipp, Mark Thomas, Joe Baumgartner and manager John Hulley.
Nov. 18, 1961 — Life at the Corriganville Movie Ranch near Hollywood has its ups and downs for an apprentice like 18-year-old Judy Melick of Warsaw, who is training to be a stunt girl and acting in shows supposedly depicting the Old West.
