Ethan Wright, Wawasee High School student, holds the gold medals he received at the district and state contests of the Indiana State School Music Association.

SYRACUSE — Ethan Wright, a senior at Wawasee High School, aspires to be a music therapist. His voice was “golden” enough to earn a gold medal at the Indiana State School Music Association state contest Saturday, Feb. 18, at Perry Meridian High School in Indianapolis.

Wright sang “Tally-ho!,” a song written by Franco Leoni to earn his gold medal. Nervous feelings before performing in front of a judge changed into a much more positive emotion. “I was elated, I was extremely happy,” he said, commenting on his reaction upon hearing he had earned a gold medal.

All throughout his years in high school, he has been connected to music in one form or another. Wright is the dance captain for Vocal Motion, the show choir for WHS. He has also been actively involved in several plays or musicals. Presently he is preparing for his role as Jud Fry in the spring musical “Oklahoma!”

It will be the seventh play he will appear in.

Wright said he plans to attend Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and double major in music and medical. He hopes to someday be a music therapist, he said.

In addition to being involved in drama and music, he is a member of the National Honor Society and as a community service project tutors kids in math and science. He also helps build the play sets at WHS, has done bell ringing for the Salvation Army and enjoys baking, cooking and “just helping other people.”

Wright is the son of Robin Campbell.
